Mick's Lamborghini VIN Decoder (Version 24.06)
Overview of 17 character VIN components for passenger cars (emphasis North America):
- World Manufactures Index (WMI): VIN positions 1, 2 and 3 typically
contain the WMI code. Position 1 defines a world
region (like Europe), position 2 defines a country within that world region
(like Italy), and position 3 defines a manufacturer located in that country.
Since the 3rd position alone is normally insufficient to cover all the
manufactures located in one country, multiple country codes can be
assigned to any one country. The critical exception to positions 1, 2 and 3
being a complete WMI code is when position 3 is a 9 (nine). Position 3 being a 9
indicates a "small manufacturer" and that a WMI subcode is to be found at
VIN positions 12, 13 and 14 which will indicate the actual manufacturer. The
definition of "small" being a manufacturer who would produce no more than
"500" cars per model per year.
- Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS): VIN positions 4 thru 8 comprise the VDS.
These positions may be used by the manufacturer to describe the engine, body,
transmission, safety features and emission control systems. For VINs issued
prior to model year 2010, positions 4 and 5 are required to be alpha and positions 6
and 7 numeric. From model year 2010 onwards, positions 4, 5 and 6 can be alpha or numeric
and position 7 must be alpha.
- NHTSA Check digit (9th position):
For many years, only vehicles destined for North America (NA) were required
to have a valid check digit for position 9. Computing the check digit requires
transliteration of alpha values, multiplying in a weight factor per position,
summation and lastly a modulus. A check digit of value zero, which is not computationally
correct, would imply a non NA vehicle.
- Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS): VIN positions 10 thru 17 comprise the VIS.
The VIS provides for identification of a individual vehicle of that described by the VDS.
Positions 13 thru 17 must be numeric.
- Model Year (MY) identification: Previous to model year 2010, the model year
could be determined solely by the value in the 10th position. By model year 2009, all 30 available unique
values for the model year position of the VIN had been used. These 30 values would need to
be reused starting model year 2010 and so another "rule" needed to be defined to help clarify
the model year. In addition to reading the 10th position, one must now read the 7th position.
If the 7th position is numeric, the model year referred to in position 10 of the VIN is within
1980-2009. If the 7th position is alpha, the model year range of the VIN is within 2010-2039
- Invalid Values: Letters I, O and Q are invalid in a VIN. In addition, letters U and Z
and digit 0 are invalid for Model Year.
- International VIN standards define the VIN Model Year as August 1st to July 31st

Lamborghini specific VIN Notes:
- MY 2001 check digit:
Numerous year 2001 VINs have invalid check digits. It appears that
the check digits were generated assuming a 2000 model year. The VINs
model year was subsequently changed to 2001 and the check digit was not
re-generated. For this reason, services like CARFAX have suppressed
the check digit check for year 2001 Lamborghinis. Further, there are
no USA delivered model year 2000 Lamborghinis.
- Misc Descriptions:
A couple of odd ball descriptions have been included and italicized.
These are exactly how Lamborghini has additionally described the value.
